After High School (Career, Accomplishments, Favorite Activities, Message to classmates…, etc.)

After high school I took several years enjoying myself whether it was at school (a couple of years at UMC-Columbia) or moving to Arizona then onto Oregon.  Finally ending up back in Columbia, MO where I persevered through an associates degree in nursing.  I worked a couple of years learning to be a nurse in the medical intensive care unit at the University hospital.  Restlessness took hold and I joined the Peace Corps and spent the next couple of years realizing how much I didn’t know about nursing in Guatemala Central America.   By 1986 I was back in Columbia eventually finishing with a Masters in Nursing as a nurse practitioner.  The next year I married a wonderful man I’d met in Central America.  Oddly enough he grew up 60 miles from St Louis.

Craig finished a second degree in engineering and after way too much school we moved to Washington DC.  I worked on the Eastern Shore at a migrant health clinic during the week and at various hospitals in Washington during the weekends and Craig worked the beltway.

Distance took its toll and within a five year period we had 3 children Jess, Sam and Emma.  I eventually defended my thesis and took a joint position with the National Institute of Aging and Johns Hopkins.  It was a fun job for almost 4 years but it was time to come home and be closer to my family.  My folks passed away 6 months of each other not too long ago.  Then in association with a Benedictine nun we opened a clinic for uninsured immigrants.  Three years later the clinic has closed but the Donnell Foundation still exists for future provisions.
