CHS Memories (Friends, Funniest story, Teachers, Events, Activities, Sports, Songs, Would like to forget…, etc.)

Here we go… My parents had planned on my attending John Burroughs, but I sabotaged the process in my written essay, about… “Ghosts”… As my father later commented, “You sure ‘spooked’ them!” – The rest is CHS history! Egging Redows - “I saw you Jimmie Holtzman”, Holtzman’s ‘suspension system!’, “The Duke”, Abell’s ‘many’ farm get together’s… – Abell always got caught! Being cool with Ostapowicz (or so we thought!), The river trip with Deex, Osto & Garfinkel (You boy’s must be from the city!), Controversy, Having a romantic ‘opportunity’ only to find out that I was being used to gain information about David Stone! Giving Susie McKay her nickname ‘O.K.’… Saving Ansehl from Andy Manchester! Ansehl’s favorite quote, “I want my cake and eat it too!”, Weitzman’s basement get togethers, Lesser’s slumber party! Schwietzers senior ‘stink-out’, Martins parties!, living next to the head ‘thug’ at CHS…Jon Lieb!, Deogny wrecking my grandfathers car! The Cathy Smith episode, My personal charge at Velvet exceeding $500.00, Charging steaks & beer at Wydown Market… Charging beer at Glazers… Having my mother give Glazers my photo reminding them ‘not to sell me beer!’ Balabans, Talayna’s, Busch’s Grove, Steak ‘n Shake runs (my mother believed that Steak ‘n Shake gave us all those glasses!), delivering ‘well done’ Steak Burger’s to Mr. Holtzman, Stone’s love for strawberry short cake at Howard Johnson’s! Skinny dipping at the Racquet Club, Streaking at DEPO!, Senior sleep-out…Skinny-dipping at the NAT! Shaving my head with Varley at 3:00 AM, Parties at 19 Southmoor (foot prints on the ceiling!), east side runs. Letting Rader ‘rest up’ in my car the night of our graduation party…only to return later that night to find her still there and requesting that I help her home (without her parents waking up!)… she hasn’t changed a bit! Sports: My run ins with Hopper, Pikey, Griffith, Luther… More controversy! Coach Hovda smiling to me and saying “Let’s run that play again!” (Great Guy!), “Turn those white shoes black and blue!”, Deogny’s 47 yard field goal against Maplewood our sophomore year. Tim Hartz’s half mile run at the State track meet in Columbia (awesome!), Ladrieres ‘catch’ to beat Berkely (Incredible! – Thanks Ray!), SBA, Big Back’s vs. Little Back’s, Moog’s pre-graduation speech to the class (I want a copy!) Favorite Teachers: Dr. Adzick without question! Frank Queering (Maune you yonker!) 1:00 AM Train Hops, My mother telling Dawson Pickey, “Don’t you have anything better to do than to harass my children”…The nicest thing Dawson Pickey ever said to me…”You Maune’s all think you can get by on good looks and personality” - What a compliment! Regrets… Having never worked very hard in school… My Grandfather always said, “you don’t want to be an ‘A’ student, because the ‘A’ students end up working for the ‘C’ students!” – He was right! Loved everyday at CHS and couldn’t wait to get up in the morning and come to school!

After High School (Career, Accomplishments, Favorite Activities, Message to classmates…, etc.)

College: Admittedly, most of the guidance counselors at CHS recommended my attending one of those second tier schools. However, I had other ideas…after reading ‘The Underground Book on Party Schools’, I applied to the University of Wyoming, Wisconsin & Arizona and was pretty well set on attending Wyoming when Barry Ellis suggested I look at the University of Miami, FL…After all ‘he was going to attend this school’ (that should have been my first clue!) - I arrived in Miami in August and quickly went to find Barry…Apparently, he not only missed the plane, but had decided ‘last second’ not to attend! It was an exciting time, I made the nationally ranked Miami Hurricane football team that August as a ‘walk-on’ wide receiver, played in the Orange Bowl and was set to move to halfback that Spring when they brought in Miami’s number one recruit that year… a big strapping young kid named… Otis ‘O.J.’ Anderson! (so much for that idea) Attended ‘several’ schools after that before my father decided to pull the plug… I have spent the last 27 years working for and now co-owning what was once the family business started by my Grandfather in 1936… Len A. Maune Company, The Maune Company, Profile Systems, Inc., National Erectors, Inc., Installation Techniques, Inc., Fording Glass Company and Architectural Plaster Systems. Today, Mays-Maune & Associates, Inc. is Manufacturer’s Representative, Agent, Distributor, Dealer and Installing Sub-Contractor of custom exterior window, window-wall and curtainwall systems serving the commercial, institutional and historic markets. Our close work with the architect has led to the development of several innovative systems for specialized uses… The ‘Zero-Sightline’ window, ‘Truss-Wall’ and ‘Tech-Wall’ to name but a few (Following the release of ‘Tin Man’, most of my friends thought I scam artist selling metal siding!) I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the best window & curtainwall designers in the industry. Our ability to articulate custom opportunities and new products to the architect and our steadfast belief that the architect should not unnecessarily compromise his design by accepting another manufacturer’s standard criteria has continued to push our firm to the forefront. (No, Amy Lesser never called for our design assistance!) Still don’t feel that old, but I have started to think more about retirement… Just another 16 years if Meg graduates on time! (I’am an ‘old’ Dad!) My hobbies…antiques…people (they go hand and hand!), old homes (I’am on my 8th!), animals (my wife has everyone convinced that we rescued all these animals!) and ‘doodoling’…errhh designing old New England Style Salt Boxes, Capes etc. – I have 13 home designs/replications complete and hope to have another fifteen completed before publishing and selling the designs to home owners and building contractors (I’am a frustrated architect) - Although I don’t travel that much any more (hate to be away from the kids) it has been quite a trip, I have had more opportunities than most deserve, always had fun and continue to make lasting friendships. My grandfather told me years ago, that if you meet just one new person each day you will be successful… to my wife’s chagrin, he was right again!
